For standard light vehicle applications, a flange thickness of 8mm (5/16") is sufficient when using grade 304 stainless steel. However, for high-performance forced induction (turbocharged) systems or commercial diesel exhaust networks, a flange thickness of 10mm (3/8") to 12mm (1/2") is recommended. The extra thickness helps resist warping caused by the extreme clamping load of V-band or multi-bolt configurations operating at temperatures above 700°C.
While AISI 304 is the industry standard for land-based vehicles, AISI 316 contains 2-3% Molybdenum (Mo), which substantially enhances its resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion.
