What's a Catalytic Converter?

A catalytic converter is a device that uses a catalyst to convert three harmful compounds in car exhaust into harmless compounds. The three harmful compounds are:

• Hydrocarbons VOCs (in the form of unburned gasoline, produce smog)
• Carbon monoxide CO (a poison for air-breathing animals)
• Nitrogen oxides NOx (lead to smog and acid rain)

How does it work?

In a catalytic converter, the catalyst (platinum and palladium) is coated onto a ceramic honeycomb housed in a muffler-like package. It converts carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide (CO to CO2), hydrocarbons into CO2 and water, and nitrogen oxides back into nitrogen and oxygen.
